Motivation

Status on 2026-09-19. Migrated from the private devspaces-consolidation repo (motivation.md v2, 11 July 2026). This is the durable "why": the theory of change, the four functions, the reasons to consolidate, the non-goals. Decisions marked ✅ below were carried out (one home, Learn / Build / Fund, one Substack, courses on the web with an email option). Open questions 3 (tagline) and 2 (name) have since moved: see ../branding/naming.md and ../branding/README.md. Question 4 (does "Conscious Coliving" survive as a sub-brand) is answered in practice: it stays in course and topic names inside Learn. Questions 5 to 12 are tracked in beads or done; check bd list before treating any as open.

Why consolidate four sites into one, what is that one thing, and who is it for?

The strategic background (the real "why")

The goal is not a website. The goal is that more developmental spaces exist in the world — intentional communities, schools, monasteries, coliving spaces and other environments dedicated to cultivating inner capacities for a paradigmatic (second renaissance) transition.

For that to happen, several functions have to work together — this is the theory of change, currently buried at the end of the whitepaper (§6 "The Path Forward": field-building → implementation & uptake, explicitly listing convening, funding & partnerships, operational resources, and "accessible courses, directories, and a compelling public narrative"):

The consolidation rationale: these four sites are organs of one strategy, and the strategy is invisible because they are scattered. No visitor to any one site can see the whole. Meanwhile maintaining parallel properties (including two barely-maintained Substacks) exceeds available capacity.

A second, equally important driver: there is a large unpublished backlog in every dimension — teal estate / capital material, strategy & field-building summaries (decks, video recordings), and conscious-coliving material. The consolidated site is the precondition for publishing it: a place where any new piece has an obvious home.

Situation

Four public entry points, each individually coherent:

• developmentalspaces.org — canonical statement of the concept: whitepaper, manifesto, partner network (Fetzer, Ekskaret, Commonweal, Springboard, LIONE), Substack. Does one job well: "the concept exists, serious people back it, here it is."
• consciouscoliving.org — Canva one-pager fronting 3 free email courses (delivered from Brevo — the real content lives in email sequences, not on the site) plus a curated index of ~18 lifeitself.org blog posts.
• tealestate.net — Substack on the capital / real-estate layer for funding conscious community.
• archipelago.place — bespoke map of places. Deprioritized: out of scope for this consolidation phase; cross-link only, revisit later.

Operating reality: this is an active publishing library plus self-running email courses — no hosting, gatherings, or high-touch offerings in the near term. The near-term activity is publishing: the teal estate backlog, strategy/vision material, project updates, and course landing pages.

Complication

1. Fragmentation hides the strategy and splits attention, SEO, and brand equity four ways.
2. Maintenance capacity is below what four properties (and two Substacks) require.
3. The thing that works — DS.org as concept/credibility artifact — must not be broken by the merge.
4. The registers differ: institutional/visionary (manifesto) vs practical/warm (coliving courses). Merging without explicit information design blurs both.
5. The backlog stays unpublished as long as there's no obvious place to put each piece.

Question

How do we restructure these properties into one home that (a) makes the theory of change visible, (b) gives every piece of the publishing backlog an obvious slot, and (c) preserves the credibility artifact — within very limited maintenance capacity?

Hypothesis (decisions as of 2026-07-11)

One home at developmentalspaces.org, mission-first front door, function-based streams: Learn / Build / Fund.

• Front door is mission-first. Home page states the theory of change plainly (one paragraph, not whitepaper-speak), then routes by function. "Developmental Spaces" stays the brand; plain-language work happens in routing labels, not the name. ✅ decided
• Streams by function, not audience (people occupy multiple roles; audience-framing causes bounce): ✅ decided
  • Learn — discover the idea and the life: intro content, the email courses (incl. new practice-psychology course), curated reading. Absorbs consciouscoliving.org.
  • Build — design knowledge + field-building: whitepaper, manifesto, network, guides/patterns, strategy material.
  • Fund — the capital layer: teal estate material, funder education, project/fundraising updates. Absorbs tealestate.net.
• One Substack. Merge tealestate into the developmentalspaces Substack as a section. Highest-value mechanical move; do early. ✅ decided
• Courses stay email-delivered; the site provides a proper landing page per course. Publishing course content as web pages is a later phase.
• The site is a publishing machine. IA test: any new post/update (a fundraising update, a strategy deck, a course announcement) is trivially placeable in exactly one stream.
• Content before design. Migrate into the stream structure first; apply the new design (Claude design exploration, assets/) once the IA is stable on real content.
• Legacy domains redirect into their stream (consciouscoliving.org → Learn; tealestate.net → Fund). Archipelago untouched for now.

Open questions (remaining tree)

• Migrating lifeitself.org blog posts (stay canonical there; DS links out).
• Hosting/gathering offerings (not near-term reality).
• Archipelago integration (deferred).
• Rebranding Life Itself.
