Naming: Conscious Communities and Developmental Spaces

The decision

Conscious Communities is the public name of the site and initiative: masthead, nav, page titles, newsletter, social.

Developmental Spaces is the name of the concept and of the serious artifacts: the whitepaper, the manifesto, the network, and the Build stream. It is the term used in academic, research and institutional contexts.

The canonical domain stays developmentalspaces.org.

This is a dual-name structure, not a rename. Both names stay in active use. What changed on 18 Sep 2026 is which one goes on the front door.

Working lockup and tagline

Masthead: Conscious Communities

Descriptor (small, under the masthead or in the footer): An initiative of Life Itself and friends. Not "a Developmental Spaces initiative": developmental spaces is a concept, not an organisation, so it belongs in the tagline and body copy, not in an attribution line.

Tagline (chosen 2026-09-18): Developmental spaces where people grow. With the descriptor no longer naming the concept, the tagline is where "developmental spaces" meets the visitor first, and "where people grow" says what the concept means in plain words.

Alternatives considered and kept on file, since a tagline is the cheapest thing on the site to change:

• Cultivating developmental spaces where people grow (mirror of the previous tagline)
• Communities designed for human growth
• Living together, on purpose (currently the Learn stream hero; warm but says nothing about development)
• Designing developmental spaces for human flourishing (from the Feb 2026 thread)

The exact hero wording is decided in the redesign, not here.

Why

For putting Conscious Communities on the masthead

1. It follows our own stated pattern. The Sep 2025 branding doc set out a dual naming strategy modelled on Fundamental Wellbeing / PNSE and Second Renaissance / Pragmatic Utopianism. In both precedents the accessible name is the public brand and the rigorous term lives in the papers. The July 2026 decision put the rigorous term on the masthead, inverting that pattern without giving a reason.
2. It serves the primary audience. The ratified audience hierarchy puts people exploring conscious community living first. They arrive through "conscious community" and "coliving" language and search. A masthead that needs its own tagline to soften it taxes exactly the people we most want to welcome.
3. First-contact reactions. People in and around the network (Sylvie among others) consistently prefer "conscious communities" or "conscious coliving" and find "Developmental Spaces" a mouthful and somewhat off-putting. The Feb 2026 stress test said the same: "abstract noun phrase, slightly cold at first contact". The site has now been live under the DS masthead for two months and that reaction has not gone away.
4. The strong spine loses nothing. The whitepaper, manifesto, network and Build stream keep the Developmental Spaces name at full strength. The two-beat visitor experience ("this is the kind of community I want to live in" → "oh, there is serious design thinking here") works better when the second beat is a discovery rather than a hurdle at the door.

For keeping Developmental Spaces on the masthead (and why they did not win)

1. Domain, paper, manifesto and network all carry the DS name. True, and they keep it. Domain and masthead differing is common and the descriptor line ties them together.
2. "Conscious Communities" is generic and the phrase is crowded. True. It is socially descriptive rather than distinctive. The answer is the spine: no lifestyle brand has a research-grade whitepaper, institutional signatories and published archives. Distinctiveness comes from what is one click deep and from the design, not from the masthead.
3. The ten-year test ("do you want to be known for advancing the design of developmental environments?"). The concept keeps its name, so the long-horizon thesis is intact. What we are known for is carried by the paper and the field work, not by the site title.
4. The July decision set a six-month no-relitigation window. This revisit came early because of new evidence (sustained first-contact reactions) and because the redesign is about to happen anyway. Changing the masthead once, with the redesign, is cheaper than changing it later.

Rules of use

What this does not change

• The whitepaper, manifesto and their titles.
• The three-stream architecture (Learn / Build / Fund) and the wide-door / strong-spine doctrine.
• The "new home" blog post of July 2026, which stays as a historical record.
• The domain.

When it lands

The masthead flip shipped with the redesign on 2026-09-19 (see design-direction.md). The site, nav, browser title and About page now say Conscious Communities. The rollout beyond the site (domain redirect, newsletter name, partners, social) is tracked in beads.

Open items

• Still open: set up the redirect from consciouscommunities.net (ours, Cloudflare) to developmentalspaces.org. consciouscommunities.org is parked for sale on Afternic; .com is taken; consciouscollectives.org is ours but "communities" is the better word.
• Still open: decide the Substack display name and any social handle changes.
• Still open: tell the network and partners (Fetzer, Commonweal, Ekskäret, Springboard, LIONE) now that the flip is live; a short note on the reasoning above is enough.

Re-litigation policy

Do not revisit before six months after the redesign goes live with the Conscious Communities masthead. The tagline may change at any time.
