Brand narrative — Conscious Communities / Developmental Spaces
Brand narrative
Migrated on 2026-09-18 from ../devspaces-consolidation/brand-narrative.md, where it was ratified on 2026-07-12. Revised for the naming flip of 2026-09-18. The aesthetic section that used to live here is now design-direction.md. Uses the same format as the 2020–21 fund brand narrative, which worked.
Decision 1: Posture — how strong do we go?
| A. Reference point | B. Publishing home ← decided | C. Movement platform | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Minimalist landing: the idea, the paper, the network list (the Sep 2025 framing) | Active library + newsletter: streams, courses, archive, steady publishing of the backlog, deal-flow updates | Full network hub: member directory, events, community features, gatherings |
| Cadence | Touch rarely | Publish when there is something (weekly to monthly) | Requires community management |
| Capacity needed | Minimal | What we already do (Substack + occasional pages) | More than currently exists |
| Risk | Wastes the merged content; consolidation pointless | Ambition creep toward C | Empty-restaurant problem |
Decision: B, explicitly not C (yet). The consolidation built B; the backlog feeds it; it needs no new capacity beyond writing and publishing. C stays a future option the narrative can gesture at ("a developing network") without promising. This deliberately supersedes the Sep 2025 "minimalist landing" framing.
Decision 2: Audience — who is this most for?
The evidence (WhatsApp consultation, fund job stories, who actually shows up) gives a primary plus two secondary audiences rather than one:
- Primary: the seriously curious. People exploring conscious community living: considering joining, visiting, or starting. They arrive via coliving language, courses, search. They are the volume audience and the top of every funnel. (Validated: Carolyn, Simon, the course subscribers.)
- Secondary 1: builders and designers. Founders of spaces, designers of developmental environments (An, ~R, Phillip). They need the paper, design knowledge, the network.
- Secondary 2: capital and field. Investors, funders, partner organisations (Fetzer, Ekskäret et al.). Fewest in number, largest per-capita impact. They need credibility artifacts: paper, manifesto, partner logos, fund thinking.
The front door speaks to 1 in plain language; 2 and 3 must recognise themselves within one click (Build / Fund). Learn / Build / Fund implements this; this doc makes it doctrine.
One person often spans streams (a therapist who colives; a founder who invests). That is why navigation is by function, not by audience.
Decision 3: The narrative
| Our ambition | A world where living in conscious community, in spaces devoted to growing together, is easy to find, real to experience, and sustainable to build; where such developmental spaces are as normal a life choice as a university or a neighbourhood. |
| Why we are here | The crises of our time are, at root, crises of inner development, and modernity has no institutions for it. People increasingly want this way of living; pioneers are building spaces for it; capital is looking for it. But the three cannot find each other, and the knowledge is scattered. |
| What and how | The home of the developmental spaces field. We help people discover conscious community living (courses, guides), help pioneers build spaces (whitepaper, manifesto, network, design knowledge), and help projects get funded (capital thinking, deal-flow). We publish openly and steadily: a working library, not a brochure. |
| What makes us different | We bridge registers the way we bridge worlds: rigorous and warm. A research-grade whitepaper next to a friendly email course; a manifesto with institutional signatories next to honest archives of what we tried and what did not launch. Radical transparency (we publish our archives) plus ten-plus years of lived practice (Life Itself hubs, residencies, courses). |
| Who we are here for | First: people seriously exploring conscious community living. Behind them: those building such spaces, and those funding them. |
| Ownership and voice | Stewarded by Life Itself, held with partners: "Life Itself-powered, part of a wider ecosystem". Distributed stewardship, not a house brand. |
| Naming | Dual-name structure, decided 2026-09-18 (see naming.md): Conscious Communities is the public name and masthead. Developmental Spaces names the concept, the whitepaper, the manifesto, the network and the Build stream. Pattern: Fundamental Wellbeing / PNSE; Second Renaissance / Pragmatic Utopianism. |
| Values | Growth, honesty (including about failures), patience, practicality, service to the field over the brand. |
| Personality | Warm-rigorous. Visionary but concrete. Never salesy, never vague. |
The wide-door / strong-spine doctrine
Ratified 2026-07-12. Resolves the strong-versus-gentle tension permanently. Unchanged by the naming flip; if anything, the flip is the doctrine applied more consistently.
- The strong-versus-gentle question is an architecture, not a choice. The spine (the Developmental Spaces thesis, the paradigmatic-transition argument, the whitepaper voice) stays at full strength. It is the moat against generic "conscious living" content, and it is carried by artifacts no lifestyle brand has: a research-grade paper, institutional signatories, published archives.
- The door stays wide: "conscious communities" does the entry work in the masthead, tagline, Learn stream, courses and search. The intended visitor experience is two-beat: "this is about the kind of community I want to live in" → "oh, there is serious design thinking here."
- Strong language is never deleted, only placed: front door = human; About, manifesto and paper = full civilisational voice, one click deep.
Voice and register by stream
From BRIEF.md (2026-07-11).
- Home and Learn: plain, warm, concrete. No jargon on first contact ("communities where people grow", not "multi-domain ontological development").
- Build: the manifesto and whitepaper register lives here: visionary, rigorous, institutional. One click deep, never on the front door.
- Fund: sober, credible, finance-literate but values-explicit.
- Never hard-sell. The old consciouscoliving.org copy leaned salesy; soften on migration (done for Learn).
Positioning line
The home of the developmental spaces field: learn about conscious community living, build developmental spaces, and fund them.
With the naming flip, a front-door version: Conscious Communities: the home for people exploring, building and funding developmental spaces.
Attribution
"by Life Itself" with partner logos (Fetzer, Commonweal, Ekskäret, Springboard, LIONE) as a credibility layer, placed mid or low on pages, never as the headline.
